DIY Wood Floating Shelves

Farmhouse· Uncategorized

In our family room, I knew I wanted to fill it with lots of pictures to really warm up the space and make it feel like home.

I love the idea of a gallery wall, but I feel like you REALLY have to do them right, or else they just end up looking amateur-ish and kinda tacky. And the perfectionist in me was just not up for that task! Haha. We also had two pretty decent size empty spaces on either side of our family room, and I felt like a gallery wall on each would be too busy, and two different schemes would be unbalanced. So instead, we decided to create some floating shelves in each of those spaces, so I could get the picture feel I was going for, with more structure and less room for crookedness 😉

And OH MY GOD was it easy. Like so, so easy. Way less intimidating than I was anticipating, they came together easy, and most of all they were super inexpensive!

I filmed the whole process and showed it this video, so you can check it out to get the step-by-step process.

I absolutely love how the shelving turned out, and I think it fits perfectly in the space. I also love that the shelving & frames are classic, and through the years we can continue to swap out pictures to keep them relevant and to display some of our favorite days and memories together.

What you’ll need:

4 – 6ft by 5 1/2 in Pine boards (the amount and size I needed, although you could use whatever size to fit your space. Got them from Lowes)

220 grit sandpaper

Miniwax stain ‘Espresso’

8 – Flat brace hardware

Matte black spray paint

Stud Finder

Level

Nails (the ones we used we’re in an assorted kit, and I’m not sure the exact size)

xx Becca

    Hey Becca!
    Congrats on launching your blog!
This actually looks like a DIY I might actually be able to pull off! … Even if I don’t end up doing it, you’ve definitely inspired me to print out our engagement photos at least – your photos all look so beautiful and really finish off the room! (I’ve been meaning to print ours out for aages and just haven’t gotten around to it yet!)
